The International SynBYSS Conference is focused on bringing together the synthetic biology community with the explicit goal of developing young scientists worldwide. As early-career synthetic biology researchers begin their own research, there are few conferences that provide an opportunity for them to express their ideas, network effectively, or collaborate widely. Moreover, these young practitioners are an increasingly diverse group without obvious representation.

The 2nd International SynBYSS Conference will be held June 8–11, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain at Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The 1st International SynBYSS Conference was held at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, December 9-12, 2024.

Thinking about the fundamentals of animal development, Alan Turing famously stated that the description of a biological system consists of two parts: a mechanical and a chemical. He added that their interdependence creates a challenge for understanding and that, for practical reasons, one might want to treat them as separate objects of studies. Over the last forty years developmental biology has focused on the role that genes (the chemical) play in development. However, a complete understanding requires to include the mechanical element, a component that is #NotInTheGenes. Over the last few years, a number of studies with a focus on cells, rather than genes, have begun to delve into this aspect of development. 

This symposium will explore animal development from the perspective of the contribution of cellular ensembles to the emergence and shaping of the animal body plan.

Organized by the Stembryo lab and sponsored by the ERC-2018-ADG-834580-MiniEmbryoBlueprint project and the UPF.

The European Bioconductor Conference (EuroBioC2025) will take place on September 17-19, 2025, at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), in Barcelona, Spain. EuroBioC2025 will bring together the Bioconductor community to showcase the latest cutting-edge developments on Bioconductor software packages, as well as on broader emerging technologies impacting computational biology.

Right before EuroBioC2025 starts, on Monday and Tuesday 15th and 16th of September, the Bioconductor training committee organizes the following two-day Bioconductor Carpentry Workshops:

• Analysis and interpretation of bulk RNA sequencing data with Bioconductor: This course shows how to use Bioconductor packages to analyse bulk RNA-seq data including how to import and annotated quantified data into R, exploratory analysis and quality control, differential expression analyais and gene set enrichment analysis. Pre-requisites: familiarity with R and Bioconductor. Instructors: Estefania Mancini, Vasileios Panagoitis Lenis and Jacques Serizay.

• Analysis and interpretation of single-cell RNA sequencing data with Bioconductor: This course shows how to use Bioconductor packages for essential single-cell analysis steps including quality control, cell type annotation, multi-sample analysis, working with large data, and integration with public data. Pre-requisites: familiarity with R and Bioconductor, familiarity with bulk RNA-seq data analysis is beneficial, but not strictly required. Instructors: Robert Ivánek and Kevin Rue-Albrecht.

Each workshop takes two days (9am-5pm approx.), so you should either register for one or the other. Lunch and tea/coffee breaks will be provided.

What is a Bioconductor Carpentry Workshop

The Carpentries is a global community focused on teaching foundational coding and data science skills to researchers. The core of this community are Carpentries Instructors, who work together to grow their instructional and technical skills. Bioconductor is a member of The Carpentries, supporting community members to earn Carpentries instructor certification, develop Bioconductor-specific training materials, and teach Carpentry workshops on those materials.

A Bioconductor Carpentry Workshop is a course on how to use Bioconductor packages and workflows, led by Carpentry-certified instructors on materials developed by the Bioconductor community.
